Me and a few coworkers were recently discussing the history of sagging and we each had similar answers. “It started in jail. Inmates couldn’t ware belts due to safety issues.” “Men who were gay in jail sagged to be identified.” Okay I’m not sure so I’m going to read about the origin of sagging.
Sagging pants: wearing pants below the waist so that undergarments are showing.
Most sources report that sagging pants began in the prison system. Belts are not allowed to be worn, due to the fact that they can be used as weapons 0r commit suicide. This resulted in the ill-fitting generic pants, too large to stay up on their own, to ride low on prisoner’s hips. CLADWELL
I Also Asked My Brother His Opinion About The Origin Of Sagging
In 1986, the front street crips, which where black boys. Who drove a low rider car started tucking their t-shirts into their boxers. And lowering their pants just a little to symbolize they gang ban. “Really, black people created sagging?” Absolutely, I was there in the beginning of it. Watched it change into what it is now!! First hand Knowledge!
1987 a combination of things occurred around the same time. The drug war started sending more people to prison than ever before. The prison authorities took belts away because they were used as weapons and to combat suicide attempts. The convicts pants would droop over a few years. And because so many gang members where going to prison, it just morphed into this unconscious thing. Now they think it makes them look hard or hip. It’s all an illusion!
“Sagging in jail. Did it represent a gay person?” NO!! There’s guys who sag in jail that would hurt you real bad or kill you for just looking at them the wrong way!
